5 out of 5 stars Best money ever spent!   December 20, 2009

I wish I had this for my daughter six years ago. Just like with my daughter, my new son (3 weeks old) doesn't like to be put down and lay flat on his back in his pack and play or crib. This sleeper is PERFECT! He's been sleeping in it for the past two days. I got the dishes done with two hands and I slept so much better last night without him in the bed (and the worry that goes with that).
The sleeper is in the reclined sitting position that you naturally hold a baby in. He doesn't even notice that I'm not holding him anymore. And while he's cozy and snug, there isn't any safety concern with breathing space.
This is easy to put together (I did it by myself) and light weight enough to tote around the house.
I love this product and recommend it to anyone with a newborn that doesn't like to be put down!!

I've had this product for three nights. Each night, our 7.5 week old son has slept more soundly and for increasing longer periods. Prior to buying this, we were using an Arm's Reach mini-cosleeper and he was waking up every night at 3:30am and 6 am. The first night in this he slept until 4:30am, then 5:30 and last night he slept from 9:30pm until 6am and after eating for 40 mins, went back to sleep until 10am. Woohooo!

Our co-sleeper worked well for our daughter (who was sleeping through the night at 8 weeks) and is another product I would highly recommend. However, our son seems to have more congestion and needs to be elevated to sleep well. We propped him up in the co-sleeper but he still tossed and turned and snorted and coughed, frequently waking himself up. I've always been disappointed with the products on the market for elevating sleeping babies, especially since the most effective options are not approved for sleeping. So, I was very excited to see this on display at Babies R Us. I did't buy it right away. I checked on Amazon and the price was higher and it was not eligible for Prime shipping, so I went back to Babies R' Us.

I should also add that we are still swaddling our son while he sleeps in this. He's such a big and strong baby that the only swaddle blanket that works is the Miracle Blanket (another highly recommended baby product). With this blanket I can leave his legs out and still use the harness. It's not really necessary but it's better than having him sleep on the buckle. Without the swaddle his sudden arm movements disturb him. I expect however, that eventually we'll use this without the swaddle.

The design of this product is very simple but it's perfect for what we needed. I don't know why it took so long to come to market. I can't think of a better recommendation than a sleeping baby.

A few other points:
-it rocks very smoothly and easily
-has mesh on the side to allow for air flow
-seems comfortable, even for my big boy (he's already 12+ lbs)
-is very light
-seems very stable
-is lower that our bed (a normal queen mattress with frame & boxspring) but its easy to look over and check on the baby from bed

My wife and I are sort of granola types (I'm a yoga teacher and she is a sculptor.) We started out determined to use only organic and eco-friendly stuff, basically we swore off Fisher-Price altogether. However, after two weeks of using a Amby Baby Hammock, which worked great and our baby loved it, we learned that the Amby Baby had been recalled. After doing some research, I discovered that more babies die every year in un-recalled cribs then had in the Amby Baby but when you go to the website and it says that the product has been recalled and that all customers should discontinue use and find alternate arrangements its hard not to head that warning. We are new parents and if we ignored it and something happened, we'd never forgive ourselves. While I was clicking around on the blogs, I came across another couple in the same situation who ended up buying and recommending this Fisher-Price Newborn sleeper. So, for fifty bucks, we figured it was worth a try.

Have to say that this a truly great product. Its not at all eco-friendly (perhaps the first of many compromises we will have to make) but it functions as advertised. It keeps are baby in a slightly angled upright position and rocks when she moves, providing much of the same features as a hammock, and is wonderfully portable and easy to move from room to room. We put it next to the bed at night and it serves as a co-sleeper/bassinet and then we put in the living room during the day for naps.

For the price, you can't go wrong with this. I would definitely recommend it to others. As much as we are resistant to admit it, we gotta give Fisher-Price some props. Its worked great for us. Our baby is now two months old and in a few weeks we may transition to crib but, for now, the newborn sleeper is doing its job and we are grateful.

5 out of 5 stars Great product for the money!   February 22, 2010

We won this item in a raffle when our son was already 7 months old. I'd not known of this item previously, or I would have purchased it to use from birth. Our son is currently about 18-19 lbs., but I'm certain we will be able to get some good use out of it before he hits the weight limit of 25 lbs. Our baby has had some reflux issues and often couldn't sleep unless he was in his swing (we have the Fisher Price Zen Swing, which we also love). The Zen swing has a weight limit of 25 lbs. (just like this item), but our son was outgrowing it lengthwise and had starting sitting up more and moving so that it was unsafe to operate the motor. I had considered giving this item away because I thought he would be too big for it, but not so. Our baby fits great and, what's more, he really seems to like napping in it. He prefers it to napping in his crib and I can get my work done and have him right next to me.

We usually keep the sleeper in the family room, which has thick carpeting. Because of this, I am able to easily slide the sleeper around the room - often with baby in it. The baby is fairly deep in the sleeper, so I do not fear him falling out when I am moving him across the floor. It is very stable, especially with the weight of the baby. If I take it to another room, I put the baby in his crib temporarily while moving the sleeper as I don't think it was intended for carrying the baby that way. Our baby really likes when I sit in a chair, with him in the sleeper facing me, and I rock the sleeper gently with my foot. He watches me and slowly drifts off to sleep. If he is awake, I can keep him close by, and he is comforted by being able to see and/or hear me. Another advantage is if I'm watching television, I can face him away so he does not get overstimulated (and I can watch an occasional show or the news). We have not used it for night sleeping since our baby is fairly used to sleeping in his crib now, but for daytime napping this is now my go-to item. In fact, my son is sleeping in it right now as I'm writing this and rocking the sleeper with my foot.

Update (March 2010):
We just took this with us on a trip and it was great in the hotel room as well. Since our baby is used to it, I think it helped him adapt to being in an unfamiliar place. We used this during the day if we were in the room for a bit. We also brought our pack 'n play for him to sleep in at night, but he napped in this.

5 out of 5 stars Great sleeper/seat   January 25, 2010

My two month old hates to sleep on her back, and until we purchased this bed, someone had to hold her most of the time. She liked to sleep in her car seat but we knew that wasn't good for her, so I am happy to have found this sleeper. She will stay in it for a good 4 to 6 hours of sleep. Now we just have to get her to sleep during the night instead of day! I would definitely recommend this to anyone who has a baby that needs the extra secure feeling they get from a parents arms or snug car seat.
